What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil Premium is additional funding allocated to all schools in England to support disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers. This budget includes pupils who are currently entitled to free school meals, have been free school meals in the past six years (FSM ‘Ever 6’), children that are cared for or adopted from care and children whose parents are in the armed forces.

How should the money be spent?

It is entirely up to individual schools to decide how the money Pupil premium is spent, however there is an expectation that schools can prove the impact this money has had on its disadvantaged pupils. It is imperative that as a school we fully understand each of our disadvantaged pupils and know exactly what they need to help them to ‘be the best they can be’ in their learning.

At Cheam Common our approach is simple, we invest our time in getting to know our pupils really well, not just their academic ability and progress but also the whole child. We work hard to fully understand what support a pupil may need to help them achieve in a specific area and we involve them in the process. We acknowledge that no one child is the same and therefore ensure the support they receive is tailored to their individual needs whether it be welfare support, individualized learning programmes, enrichment activities to boost confidence, self-esteem and general enriching experiences or even support to develop friendships.

Our approach

Cheam Common Junior Academy seeks to ensure the effectiveness of its use of the Pupil Premium. We recognise that barriers to achievement take a variety of forms and therefore attempt to be innovative in the support that we provide. We use entry and exit judgments for all support that is being put in place and carefully track them to ensure progress is being made at all times. We evaluate our support plans throughout their time scales and we are not afraid to make changes if we feel this is appropriate.

We do this by offering our children a wide range of opportunities and ensuring that these are accessible for everyone. We work with our families and colleagues to make sure everyone has high aspirations for all pupils. We ensure pupil premium children are well represented and have a voice on our school council, learning council and other pupil groups.

Looked After Children (LAC/CLA), Post LAC and Adopted Pupils Funding

The designated teacher for LAC and for Post LAC children is the SENCo Mrs Hart. 

At Cheam Common Junior Academy we are committed to supporting all LAC/Post LAC and adopted children or those with special guardianship in order to help them thrive and develop to their full potential.

We do this through the following:

  • Training as appropriate e.g  attachment
  • Support available from the Senior Mental Health lead and/or Emotional Literacy Support Assistants
  • Family Support Worker available on request for 1:1 sessions
  • Raising awareness of specific issues e.g adoption, through class work
  • SENCo meeting with class teachers to discuss each child and review as needed
  • Termly monitoring of progress by Senior Leadership Team
  • Designated LAC/POST LAC teacher attends training as necessary to ensure the school is up to date with the latest legislation and  good practice

Additionally the designated LAC/POST LAC Leader will consider each case individually to assess any support that may help a particular child such as Drama Therapy, Nurture, therapy dog,  intervention groups or after school clubs.

Sports Preimum 

Cheam Common Junior Academy has been awarded a Sports Premium Grant since 2013/14 academic year.

The purpose of this government grant is to improve the provision of PE and sport within schools, and schools have been given freedom to choose how best to spend the money in order to do this. The funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

Swimming Proficiency for Year 6 2022 - 2023

81.25% of the pupils in Year 6 are able to:

  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • Use a range of strokes effectively

80% of the pupiils in Year 6 are able to: - 

  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
